JNU, Hyderabad varsity among the best universities in India: Govt survey

New Delhi: Even as the Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Hyderabad have been on the boil amid raging debate over nationalism and free speech, the two varsities are learnt to have performed quite well in ranking of Indian educational institutions, which will be released on Monday.

Among the universities, the Delhi University figures among the top 10 but behind JNU and Hyderabad university. The Jamia Millia Islamia university ranks further down the order.

Sources in Human Resources Development Ministry said that nearly 3,500 institutions will be ranked in six categories. It is learnt there will be separate categories for technical institutions, management institutions and universities.

Research is one of the significant yardsticks in the ranking process and both the JNU and University of Hyderabad have performed quite well, the sources said.

The University of Hyderabad and JNU were in the news recently over the death of Rohith Vemula and sedition row, respectively.

According to a Hindustan Times report,more than 3,500 higher educational institutions were considered in the survey. The other categories of institutes that have been ranked include engineering, management and pharmacy.

The criteria used to rank the institutions included teaching/learning resources, research, graduation outcomes (employability), outreach/ social and gender inclusivity and perception, the report adds.
