Haryana government rechristens Gurgaon as Gurugram, Mewat as Nuh

The BJP-led government in Haryana today approved a proposal to rename the district of Gurgaon as Gurugram.

Gurgaon: The BJP-led government in Haryana today approved a proposal to rename the district of Gurgaon as Gurugram. 

"The decision to change the name of Gurgaon as Gurugram has been taken on the basis of the representations received at several fora that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram," a state government spokesman said here.

"Haryana is a historic land of the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a centre of learning. It had been known as Gurgaon since the times of Guru Dronacharya. Gurgaon was a great center of education where the princes used to be provided education.

“Therefore, since long the people of the area had been demanding that Gurgaon be renamed as Gurugram," the spokesman further added while justifying the decision of the government in the state led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Along with Gurgaon, the name of the neighbouring Mewat district has also been changed and will now be called as Nuh. 

The official website of Gurgaon district reveals that in ancient times the district was known as Gurugram, which got distorted as Gurgaon in course of time. Similarly, Nuh was the historical name of Mewat district.  

Gurgaon is currently one of the premier industrial and financial hubs of the nation has more than 250 Fortune 500 companies and is home to about 1.7 million population.
