Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival marking the culmination of fasting and holy month of Ramzan, is being celebrated across the country today. Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted the nation on Eid and wished that it brings peace and brotherhood in society. “Eid-ul-Fitr greetings! May this auspicious day further the spirit of peace and brotherhood in our society,” he said in a tweet.

The Prime Minister had yesterday said that inspiration should be drawn from such pious festivals to spread happiness and to take the nation forward. He had emphasised that India's diversity is its speciality as well as its strength.

“The holy month of Ramzan was celebrated with devotion. Now it is time for Eid. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, my best wishes to all,” he had said.

President Pranab Mukherjee also greeted the nation on the eve of Eid yesterday as he expressed hope that the festival will strengthen the people’s “unflinching” faith in unity and common destiny.

“On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens, particularly my Muslim brothers and sisters, in India and abroad,” said President Mukherjee.

“May this joyous occasion, which marks the culmination of the period of fasting and prayer during the holy month of Ramzan, bring happiness, peace and prosperity and be an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to serve humanity,” he added.

In Srinagar, large congregations of Eid prayers will be held at Eidgah, Hazratbal, Jenab Sahib Soura and TRC ground in the city as thanksgiving at the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan.

Similar congregational prayers are also scheduled to be held at district and tehsil headquarters across the state.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has felicitated people of the state on the auspicious occasion.

In her felicitation message, the chief minister hoped that this Eid will bring everlasting peace, happiness and prosperity to the people of the state.

Mehbooba prayed that the month-long fasting and the night-long supplications of the faithful are accepted and rewarded by the Almighty.

The Chief Minister appealed to people not to forget the orphans, widows, destitute and all those who suffered during the almost 30-year long turmoil in the state during the festivities of Eid and play their positive role in bringing them back to the mainstream of society by generously donating for their welfare and cause.
