Bhopal gang-rape case: Fast-track court awards life imprisonment to all 4 accused

A 19-year-old student, studying for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was tied up and gang-raped for three hours near Bhopal's Habibganj Railway station on October 31.

A fast-track court on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to all four accused in the Bhopal gang-rape case. A 19-year-old student, studying for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was tied up and gang-raped for three hours near Bhopal's Habibganj railway station on October 31.

A special investigation team (SIT) was set up by the Madhya Pradesh police to probe the crime which triggered a massive outrage.

Four persons Golu alias Bihari Chadhar (25), Amar alias Ghuntu (24), Rajesh Chetram alias Raju (26) and Ramesh Mehra alias Raju (45) were arrested in the case.

All the accused were booked under sections 376 D (gang-rape), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC.

Describing the chain of events after the gang-rape as a "tragedy of errors", the Madhya Pradesh High Court had on November 13 directed the sessions judge to ensure that the case was heard on a day-to-day basis once the chargesheet was filed.
