One such ancient marvel is ‘Chand Baori’. Many of you must have been to the place for amusement, but very few of us know some amazing facts about this architectural marvel. Chand Baori is a stepwell situated in the village of Abhaneri in Jaipur, Rajasthan.  Abhaneri was originally named ‘Abha Nagri’ which means ‘City of Brightness’. The city has now been transformed into ruins, but it still attracts hundreds of tourists from across the globe.

Chand Baori is placed opposite Harshat Mata Temple and was built around AD 800. It has 3,500 narrow steps which add to the aesthetic beauty of the structure. The stepwell was constructed back in 9th century to meet the water demands of the folks. It is a 13-storey building which is about 100-feet deep, making it the deepest well in India. The torrid weather of the place made people dig a well so deep to get a dependable source of water.

It is the oldest and most attractive landmarks in Rajasthan. Built by King Chanda of the Chauhan Dynasty between AD 800 and AD 900. It was dedicated to Harshat Mata, the Goddess of joy and happiness. The structure of well was designed in a way to conserve as much water as possible. The bottom of the well remains 5-6 degrees cooler than the surface. One side of the well contained a pavilion and resting room for the royals.
