Los Angeles, Feb 27: Veteran Hollywood star Christopher Plummer won his long overdue Oscar by taking home best supporting actor trophy for his portrayal of an ailing widower who comes out as gay in “Beginners.”

The “Sound of Music” star, 84, pointed to his delayed honour by saying that he had been practicing the Oscar speech since he was in his mother's womb.

“You're only two years older than me, darling—where have you been all my life?,” the actor joked as he accepted his trophy on Sunday night.

Plummer then went on to thank his co-star Ewan McGregor, director Mike Mills and his “long suffering” wife.  The actor also joked that he would have liked to share the golden trophy with McGregor but he did not have the “decency”.

Mills directed the story based on his own father's life.  The other films to win early Oscar trophies were Johnny Depp-voiced “Rango” which won Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.

The film beat “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Puss in Boots”, “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita”.The Oscar for best documentary feature went to “Undefeated”.Silent film “Artist” won two trophies—the best costume design and best original score.
