Singapore: Popular Tamil filmmaker Rama Narayanan died in a private hospital here Sunday, a family source said.

"He was undergoing treatment in Singapore for kidney-related issues. He passed away after he failed to respond to the treatment. His body will be brought to Chennai Tuesday," the family source told IANS.

Rama Narayanan, who started his career as dialogue writer, had directed 126 films across multiple languages in over three decades.

Known for devotional and commercial comedy entertainers, he made his directorial debut with 1980 Tamil film "Meenakshi" and went on to direct several Tamil blockbusters such as "Veeran", "Sahadevan Mahadevan", "Anjatha Singam" and "Kandha Kadamba Kathir Vela".

Some of his best devotional hit films include "Aadi Velli", "Durga", aceThai Poosam" and "Bhairavi". He was also known for including a lot of animal characters in most of these films.

Naryanan's last film was last year's "Arya Surya". In the last few years, he had been distributing several Tamil films under his home banner Sri Thendral Films.

He had also served as the president of Tamil Nadu Film Producer Council for three consecutive terms.
