New Delhi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan today admitted that that his statements regarding ‘intolerance' were misunderstood and had an adverse impact on the box-office performance of his latest release ‘Dilwale' in some parts of India.

A month ago, around his 50th birthday on November 2, Shah Rukh Khan had sparked a controversy when he voiced his opinion on ‘intolerance' in the country. He had also backed personalities who were returning their awards in protest against the government's inability to control the menace.

Shah Rukh received a lot of flak across the nation for his comments, with many urging viewers to boycott his upcoming movie ‘Dilwale'. SRK had maintained that the people demanding the ban or boycott were “opportunists”.

Now, that ‘Dilwale' has released and the movie's business in India has slowed down, SRK has said that collections have been affected because he was misunderstood. “I have been misunderstood many times. It upsets me that I haven't been able to express my views in a better way. I apologise if my statements have hurt anyone,” he said.

“The film's performance has been impacted in some parts of the country. But I can't understand that why people are upset with something which aims at spreading happiness,” he added.

The actor also expressed his disappointment for misinterpretations of his views “I have received immense love from people of all religions. It deeply saddens me that despite being a true citizen of the country, I was misunderstood,” he said.

The weekend collections of Dilwale in India have been reported to be Rs 75.18 crores, ahead of the Ranveer-Deepika starrer Bajirao Mastani.
