New Delhi: Satyagraha movie director Prakash Jha has rejected charges that the popular Gandhi hymn Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram song in his film preached violence.
Replying to questions in Rajat Sharma's show Aap Ki Adalat on India TV, alongwith the star cast Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Amrita Rao, Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Rampal, Jha said: "You have to understand the rewritten song in today's context. We have inserted lines in that song which ask people not to bear injustice silently. Stand up, and fight against injustice.
"I am not preaching violence. If thousands of people come out on the streets of Delhi after the Nirbhaya gangrape incident, and face water cannons in their face, it is not violence. On the other hand, nobody would like today's youths to sit in their homes and go on chanting the hymn in the name of non-violence. That would be tolerating injustice", said Jha.
Jha praised Gandhian Anna Hazare as "incorruptible" and as "a man whom I admire".
"But Anna's movement fizzled out because one cannot be an authoritarian by saying, it's either my way or the highway. In democracy, you have to work in a democratic manner. That is the way his movement dissipated", said the director.
Jha, on the other hand, appreciated Arvind Kejriwal for setting up a political party and opting to join the democratic battle.
Replying to questions, actor Ajay Devgn said, youths are becoming disenchanted with the present crop of politicians.
" I think the biggest qualification for becoming a politician seems to be that one has to be a goonda (ruffian). Had I been a politician, I would have earned much money. But right now, I earn my money honestly, and not by robbing anybody."
Devgn said, today's politicians are afraid of the strength of both the young generation and the media.
Prakash Jha ruled out re-entering politics saying: "I can now give it in writing that I will never contest elections, nor join any political party. I don't want to become a neta".
About his impressions about politicians, Jha said: "We used to read in newspapers that politicians are dangerous, but in real life, they are very weak and foolish. One need not be afraid of politicians."
Aap Ki Adalat featuring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Prakash Jha, Amrita Rao, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpayee will be telecast today (Saturday Aug 31) at 10 pm and tomorrow (Sunday Sept 1) at 10 am and 10 pm on India TV.
