The Hindi film Newton hit the cinemas on September 22 and, critics couldn’t help but laud the Rajkummar Rao starrer. The film has been announced as India's official entry to Oscars 2018. Directed by Amit Masurkar, the movie follows the life of a rookie government clerk Nootan Kumar played by Rajkummar. The first day box-office collection of Newton is out and, the critically acclaimed movie has collected Rs 96 Lakhs on its opening day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh announced the box-office figure on Twitter. “#Newton witnessed ample growth in evening and night shows... Fri ₹ 96 lakhs. India biz”, he said.

Made on a budget of Rs 9 crore, Newton made huge headlines recently when speculations of the film being a copy of an Iranian movie Secret Ballot came to the forefront. However, filmmaker Amit Masurkar rubbished such claims and said, “It would be best if people watch both films before deciding or writing an article. We hadn’t even heard of Secret Ballot when we were writing the script”.

Newton revolves around a government clerk's attempt to run a fair election in a conflict-hit area. Besides Rajkummar Rao, the film also features Anjali Patil and Pankaj Tripathi.

In a recent interview with India TV, the Trapped actor talked about his co-star and said. “I and Pankajji have shared screen space with Gangs of Wasseypur and Bareilly Ki Barfi. It’s always fun working with him”.

The Amit Masurkar directiorial venture and Rajkummar Rao starrer faced the box-office battle with Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar and Sanjay Dutt starrer Bhoomi.
