New Delhi: A woman sub-inspector and a constable of anti-extortion unit of Crime Branch were arrested today and two other constables were detained for allegedly extorting money from a Punjab-based businessman after threatening to frame him in a case of sex racket.

Sub Inspector Vandana Rao and Constable Hans Kumar were arrested by the staff of south Delhi Police after it laid a trap base on a complaint by the businessman two days ago. Investigators initially thought that somebody was trying to dupe the businessman by posing as policemen but were stumped when they checked the Identity Cards of those arrested.

The victim, Jaspreet, a cloth merchant had come to Delhi four days ago and had checked in a hotel located in Delhi's Mehrauli area. On Monday, Rao and her team knocked at Jaspreet's hotel room and introduced themselves as police officials from Crime Branch.

"They told him that they had conducted a raid at the hotel and a sex racket has been busted. They asked Jaspreet to come along with them for questioning. "While a couple was taken in a car, Rao and two other policemen took Jaspreet in another car," said a police official on condition of anonymity.

Instead of taking him to a police station, they took Jaspreet to an isolated place and told him that they have recorded a video featuring him with the couples coming out of the hotel and threatened him to arrest in the case. They then allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh to dispose off the case.

"Scared by the cops, Jaspreet gave them Rs 40,000 assuring them to give remaining amount in the next meet," the official said. However, on his return to the hotel, he revealed the incident to the hotel staff, who then called the local police. "We laid a trap and both the accused were arrested today. They were nabbed as they came to take the money to the hotel," the official added.
