Season of suicide: Know how to prevent your kids from result stress

New Delhi: Be alert! This warning is for all parents and teachers whose kins are struggling over some exams and results.


Suicidal tendencies among students have gone up as they are burdened with greater expectations from the parents coupled with academic pressure.

Two worst phases of student-teacher-parent's life are pre ad post exams. They all are related because the one who loses life is the student of his teacher, and child of his parents.

Indian scenario has witnessed over 16,000 students suicides from 2010-13 (acc. to Health Ministry). Out of every three cases of suicide reported every 15 minutes in India, one is committed by a youth in the age group of 15 to 29.

Every 90 minutes a teenager tries to commit suicide in India.



Why do students evolve suicidal tendencies? What is it that convinces them to end their life during certain period of time?

- They are burdened with greater expectations from the parents coupled with academic pressure.

- Bid to end their misery after failing in their pursuit of professional excellence.

- Sometimes, kids too, knowingly or unknowingly, set very unrealistic goals for themselves. All it wreaks havoc on their respective lives.

- Depression, including excessive feelings of guilt or shame, self reproach and anger

- Feelings of worthlessness and very low self-esteem, particularly if accompanied by very high ideals or expectations

-  Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and futility

-  Feelings of alienation and isolation; being a loner
