Protests in Karnal: Man commits suicide following police harassment over love affair

Karnal (Haryana): A 23-year-old man Akhil Chauhan committed suicide on Sunday after he was disgusted over constant police harassment following a complaint filed by his beloved, whom he claimed to have married at a temple.


Hundreds of people belonging to Ror community staged protests in Karnal on Tuesday demanding arrest of 10 persons, including an SP and three policemen, for harassing Akhil which led to his suicide.

Akhil Chauhan had written a suicide note, in which he had named his 'wife', her family members and relatives, policemen, a lawyer and an IPS officer for constantly harassing him.

Akhil's family has refused to take his body from Kalpana Chawla Medical college and Hospital, and have staging dharna for the last four days. They are demanding a CBI probe and arrest of persons named in the suicide note written in Hindi.

Karnal SP Abhishek Garg has set up an special investigation team headed by a DSP to probe the matter, and two cops, Inspector Manoj Verma and ASI ram Bhajan Verma have been suspended.

Akhil's father Balwan Singh alleged that police have failed to arrest the accused belonging to the girl's family even after three days, which implies collusion of police with the accused.
