Mumbai: A Sessions court freed a man who was arrested for strangulating his wife two years ago. Though the accused, Dnyaneshwar Tukaram Sarode (30), surrendered to the Mulund police and confessed in front of a magistrate court, lack of evidence resulted in his acquittal.

The accused Dnyaneshwar was arrested in November, 2012, for killing his wife Shilpa. The Sessions court has been hearing the case for almost a year, with 12 witnesses examined by the prosecutor.

The final judgment was given by Principal Judge Sangitrao S Patil on Saturday.

The accused had an argument with his wife, after which she went to sleep. At around 12.30 am in the night, he strangled his wife with a handkerchief. He then tried to commit suicide but couldn't succeed.

He was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
