New Delhi: Police has arrested three persons of a gang known as 'Mirchi' gang, who used to rob people after giving them a lift in a cab and then attacking them with chilli powder, from Janakpuri area of west Delhi.

Paramjeet Singh (32), Sunil (30) and Vicky (31), all residents of Tilak Nagar, and active along Ring Road and Outer Ring Road from Dhaula Kuan to Azadpur, were arrested from near District Centre in Janakpuri by a crime branch team led by Inspector Yashpal Singh on August 17.

An SUV and 3 mobile phones were recovered from them. During interrogation, it was learnt that the gang robbed innocent commuters by offering them lift in a call centre cab.

Paramjeet worked as a cab driver at a call centre and used its SUV car for the crime. While Sunil lured people to board the cab, Vicky sat in the back, posing as a passenger.

Once the person was in, and the car was in motion, Sunil would throw chilly powder at the commuter while Vicky strangled him. They would then rob the victim of belongings, and dump him at a distant place," ACP, Crime Branch, Ashok Chand said.

The ACP said the trio was known as the "Mirchi Gang" because of their penchant to use chilli powder. "All the accused are drug addicts and compulsive gamblers. They needed money to finance their addiction," Chand said.

They had recently robbed one P S Naraina, on whose complaint, police apprehended the gang.

According to the police, Paramjeet was previously involved in about five criminal cases of attempt to murder, hurt and Arms Act of Delhi. Sunil too was involved in two criminal cases.
