Gurgaon: A joint team of the Food and Drug Administration, police and the Health Department today caught a person red-handed when he was selling medical kit for sex selection.

According to the Haryana Health secretary and Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration Rakesh Gupta, a three-member team was constituted to nab the accused following tip-off that kits of medicines were being sold through online deals for pre-conception sex selection.

Gupta claimed this is a unique case in the country where medicine is being used for pre-conception sex selection, which is illegal and punishable under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.  He said the accused, named Sanjay Khatana, is a resident of Delhi and attracted the couples desiring to have a male child through a website.

After obtaining request and money, he used to send the kit through courier to them. He runs an office on Bristol Lawrence Road in Delhi. The accused used to sell a kit for Rs 6,000, he claimed.

A trap was laid for the accused and he was called to Khandsa Road, Gurgaon for delivery when he was arrested, Gupta said, adding that an FIR has been lodged under various sections of the PCPNDT Act.

Meanwhile, the team, along with Gurgaon police, has now approached to Delhi authorities for raiding his office and other places from where the business was being operated.
