Mumbai: Mumbai Police on Wednesday night arrested former underworld don, now a builder, Ashwin Naik and his associate Ashok Jadhav in an extortion case.

A young man, Vasant Patkar of Sambhaji Nagar had filed a complaint in N M Joshi police station alleging that Ashwin Naik and his associate had threatened to kill him for not vacating a house.

This is the fourth case against Naik since 2011.

According to Patkar, he had bought a house in Sambhaji Nagar and he needed a transfer certificate from Ashok Jadhav, who was the secretary of the area.

Jadhav made Ashwin Naik threaten Patkar over phone saying that if he did not vacate the house he would be killed, said Shankar Singh Rajput, senior police inspector.

Ashwin Naik had been accused of killing his councillor wife Neeta in 2000, but was acquitted by the court.

He is staying with his dentist daughter Archana in Chinchpokhli.

Ashwin Naik's name used to create terror among the people during the Nineties, with several cases of extortion and murder against him.

Brother of former underworld don Amar Naik, who was killed by police in an encounter, Ashwin Naik was saved in 1994, when his rivals attacked him outside the Mumbai sessions court.

He lost both his legs, and since then he is wheelchair bound.
