London:  A 51-year-old Indian-origin man, who stabbed his daughter-in-law in her face in Britain, has been jailed for more than 10 years, a media report said.

Manjit Singh Mirgind accused his son's wife Jageer Mirgind of having extra-marital sexual relations with another man, and attacked her with a knife leading to severe injuries in both the eyes, in December 18 last year, The Ilford Recorder reported on Friday.

The Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday sentenced Mirjind to 10 years and eight months jail-term, half of which he will serve, with the rest on licence.

Mirgind, from Ilford in north-east London, was earlier charged with attempted murder, but prosecutors later accepted a guilty plea to the charge of grievous bodily harm (GBH).

Mirgind has denied attempting to kill the victim, who was hospitalised for three days after the incident.

The judge told Margind this was a "manic and horrific" attack motivated by a belief his daughter-in-law had been unfaithful, the report said.

The judge said: "There is major scarring to her face, there is serious injury to her left wrist, she now has a stutter."

"What is so distressing in this case was that your grandchildren, grandchildren aged three and six, witnessed this offence from beginning to end. They pleaded with you to stop but you did not stop," the judge stated.

The defence counsel contended that Mirgind was a "hard-working family man" who often drove his grandchildren to temple and regretted his actions.
