US-Israel ties will endure: White House

Washington: White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama is confident strong US-Israeli ties will endure far beyond Israel's parliamentary election, regardless of the victor.

Obama has had a testy relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu meanwhile declared victory after a tight national election appeared to give him the upper hand in forming the country's next coalition government.

Earlier in the day, Netanyahu reiterated a pledge to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, putting him at odds with the United States and other Western allies.

He also claimed that his right-wing Likud Party's rule was "in danger" because of Arab voters going to the polls "in droves."

When questioned about those comments, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said that US officials are "always concerned, broadly speaking, about any statements that may be aimed at marginalising certain communities."

She also said that the US officials will continue to pursue a two-state solution with Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Both Earnest and Psaki also addressed Iranian nuclear negotiations that were taking place in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are leading what formally remain talks between Iran on one side and the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on the other.

Psaki said the negotiations were at "crunch time" and said that Republican actions, including proposals for new sanctions against Iran, could be "detrimental" to the negotiations.

Earnest, meanwhile, said that it still remains to be seen if an agreement will be reached by the end of March.
