New Delhi: Somebody has rightly said that a society that is unable to respect, protect and nurture its women and children loses its moral moorings and runs adrift.

Centuries have come and gone by but the plight of women still remains a matter of grave concern. Women have always suffered discrimination at the hands of men and have been subjected to domination, exploitation, aggression and humiliation. The tragedy is that all this has happened despite women being worshipped as goddess in our society. Even the religious scriptures, the Vedas, glorified women as the mother, the creator, one who gives life and worshipped her as a ‘Devi' or Goddess. But their glorification was always confined to scriptures and they were not considered to deserve the right to equality in our patriarchal society.

Fear of violence is an important factor in the lives of most women. There are several forms of crime against women. Sometimes it takes place even before birth whereas they are subjected to such crimes while growing up and almost at every stage of life.  In the Indian society, position of women is always subservient to the man.
