Jalandhar: An accused in the case of assault on Burundi national Yannick Nihangaza here has been brought back to India from Australia, police said today.

According to DCP Naveen Singla, Jaskaran Singh Jassa, who had left for Australia following the attack on Yannick in the city in 2012, was brought here late last night by a police team.

Singla said that Jassa was presented in court today and has been placed in two days' police remand.

Yannick, a BSc student of computer science at a private university in Punjab, was on his way to attend a party in Jalandhar when he was attacked by a bunch of guys, one of whom was Romi Uppal, the son of a superintendent of police. They beat him up badly and left him by the roadside.

He had gone into a coma following the attack on him on April 21, 2012. After two years of treatment in India, he was airlifted to his country where he breathed his last this year.

Nine people were named in the FIR in connection with the assault on the 23-year-old student.
