Ghaziabad, Nov 22: Burglars, equipped with gas cylinders and cutters, looted jewellery and cash worth about Rs.one crore from a jewellery shop in the Agrasen market in the Chopla temple area here on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, police said Thursday.

The theft took place at the Radhey Lal and Sons jewellers and was reported to police after the owner opened the shop Thursday.

Police said the burglars used gas cylinders and cutters to rip at least two gates to enter the shop located on the ground floor of a two-storeyed building.

“We have recovered three cylinders, a tarpaulin sheet and a cord along with some other tools. Our forensic expert has found foot prints and finger prints from the shop that suggest at least two burglars were involved in the heist,” Superintendent of Police (City) Shiv Shankar Yadav said.

The thieves scaled the roof of an adjoining building to reach the roof of the building that houses the shop and cut open the first gate of the staircase to reach the first floor, an investigator said.

Using cutters, they ripped apart another iron door on the first floor to gain access to the staircase leading to the shop.

Police told IANS they suspected an insider's involvement as burglars knew where the eight CCTV cameras in the shop were installed.

They snapped the connections of all CCTV cameras before looting cash, jewellery, diamonds and other valuable articles.

“The burglars took items worth about Rs.one crore,” said Mohit Singhal, the shop owner's son.
