New Delhi: In the ongoing investigation in Badaun gangrape case in which the two cousins-aged 14 and 15-were found hanging from a tree after being raped in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh in the last week of May, CBI today said the main eyewitness Nazru, had failed lie detector test raising questions over his testimony.

Nazru, the sole eye-witness in the case, underwent a polygraphic test recently and reports showed "inconsistencies in his statement" on key questions related to the case, said CBI officials.

Questioning over his statements during his lie detector test, Nazru has admitted he had a mobile phone, which he had earlier denied. The mobile phone has been recovered from him and sent for forensic examination to ascertain whether any data had been deleted from the instrument, CBI said.

Uttar Pradesh police had registered a case on the basis of Nazru's statement and arrested five people including two constables.

This gangrape incident had sparked a national outrage with the Samajwadi Party government in the state coming under fire on the issue of law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Previously, forensic evidence based on DNA tests conducted by the agency ruled out any sexual assault on the two teenageres prompting the agency not to file a chargesheet in the case against the five accused who had cleared the lie detector test.

CBI had taken into custody five accused-- Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh Yadav (brothers) and constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav--for alleged rape and murder of the two teenage girls. All of them were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

CBI had also alleged the post-mortem conducted by a local doctor had discrepancies.
