Mandapam (TN): Tamil Nadu police on Saturday seized Rs 10 crore worth gold biscuits weighing more than 35 kg at Mandapam railway station.

Police said, the Coastal Security Group was keeping track of the smuggled gold, after it was taken on high seas near Araamthittu from a Sri Lanka-based agent Sathik, who had come in a fibre glass boat, and handed over the booty to two fishermen brothers, who had come in a country boat from Rameshwaram.

Police said, Mohideen, a Madurai-based agent joined the fishermen at Rameshwaram, and after taking the smuggled gold in a hired car was returning to Madurai, when he got suspicious, left the car and boarded a bus.

At Mandapan railway station, he left the two bags and absconded, police said.

Three teams of Coastal Security Group of Tamil Nadu police tracked the smugglers in police jeeps and two-wheeler. The gold will be handed over to Customs on Sunday.
