3 drug-peddlers held in Thane; say customers mostly from call centres

Thane: Three drug-peddlers have been arrested for selling Mephedrone drug in Thane district, police said.

During interrogation, the three claimed before police that 60 per cent of their customers were employees of call centres, senior inspector M V Dharmadhikari, head of Thane Crime Branch's Anti-Narcotics Cell said.  

Acting on a tip-off, Sayeed Sikander (21) and Mohammad Zahid (23) were nabbed from Rabodi area while Altaf Harun (32) was arrested from Mumbra on Wednesday while they were allegedly trying to sell the drug, he said.  

Police seized 30 gms of Mephedrone powder costing around Rs 15,000 from their possession, he said.  During interrogation by the Anti-Narcotics Cell sleuths, Zahid and Sikander said that they used to purchase the drug from Harun, who used to get it from a supplier in Mumbai, the police officer said.

Sikander and Zahid also told the police that they used to sell the drug in packets of 1 gm each at various junctions and squares in Thane.

They also informed that 60 per cent of their customers were young men and women from the call centres, he said.  

Thane Police has launched a drive to check sale of drugs near schools and colleges and are also planning to keep a watch on the call centres.
