New Delhi:  At least 14 people, including seven in Uttar Pradesh, became the victims of honour killing this year, Lok Sabha was informed today.

As per a provisional data prepared by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), seven people in Uttar Pradesh became the victims of honour killing, two in Punjab and one each in Haryana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu till October 2014.

“As per information provided by the NCRB, collection of data on honour killing has just been started this year and hence at this point it is not possible to compare data with previous years,” Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said in reply to a written question.

Rijiju said the Ministry of Law and Justice is preparing ‘The Prohibition of Interference with the Freedom of Matrimonial Alliance Bill' to curb the incidents of honour killing.

The Supreme Court in a judgement on April 19, 2012 termed the Khap Panchayats illegal and directed the state governments to take strong measures to prevent any atrocious acts by them.
