Koshambi, UP, Aug 1: Irate villagers of Manauri village near Koshambi on Sunday blocked the Delhi-Kolkata National Highway for nearly five hours alleging police connivance in the murder of a newly-wed bride in her in-laws house.
The villagers brickbatted the local police station and damaged glasspanes of several cars stranded on the highway.
23-year-old Anupama was married to Neeraj, the son of a pulse merchant Lal Bahadur in Pura Mufti locality of Koshambi five months ago.
After marriage, Anupama came to know that Neeraj already had extramarital relations with another woman, her family members alleged.
After Anupama threatened to expose him, Neeraj strangled his wife to death, poured acid on her body, tied her hands and legs and threw the body in a pond outside their house, Anupama's family members alleged.
Neeraj then told neighbours that his wife had eloped with another boy.
Anupama's parents and relatives came to the village demanding to know about her, and tried to search the body in the pond. The local police station in-charge came and threatened Anupama's family to stop searching the pond.
As the body was fished out, the villagers lost their temper and gheraoed the police station.
SP Koshambi Pratibha Ambedkar said, the gherao was withdrawn after police promised to nab Neeraj and his family members, who have fled their house after the recovery of the body.
