New Delhi: For those of us who have been using Android phones can rightly say that the experience of large screen is simply superior to the puny screens of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. While the iPhone 5S has a 4-inch screen the most bestselling Android devices are at least 4.5-inch or bigger. Finally Apple has ventured into big-screen arena by launching 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

While the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 has a 38 per cent larger area than the 5S, the 5.5-inch 6 Plus has an 88 per cent larger viewing area than the previous model. Both have splendid Retina HD displays, with resolutions of 1334 X 750 and 1920 X 1080 respectively. The screens accommodate an extra row of home screen icons.

Certainly, both models will help Apple reach an audience that just wasn't being served by the 4-inch iPhone 5s and 5c. And the phenomenal initial response just supports that. People have pre-ordered a record 4 million units to see these super-sized iPhones up close or experienced what they feel like in pockets.

The launch of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus also proves that Apple founder Steve Jobs was completely wrong when he said in 2010 that "no one" would want to buy a phone with a big screen. He said he disliked the new crop of bigger phones from Samsung et al. "You can't get your hand around it," he said, "no one's going to buy that." He also derided big phones as "Hummers."

By 2013, Apple's management realized that Jobs was wrong. During this period, there was a slowdown in iPhone sales, even though the market as a whole was growing. All the growth was in the sub $300, price range, and among phones with screens bigger than 4 inches. Certainly, Apple overlooked the fact that customers wanted devices which are big and brighter for consuming media and doing work.

Another document showed that Apple's own customers placed the small screen size of the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S among their top complaints about the devices.

In a report by Kantar Worldpanel on mobile trends it has been found that close to half of European phablet owners chose a smaller screen when they bought a new smartphone last year with the sweet spot between 4.7 inches and 5 inches. At the same time, 58 per cent of European smartphone owners whose devices measure at 5 inches or greater said they were sticking with their smartphone behemoths. Apple's new iPhones suggest that it wants to play around at the edges of Kantar's “sweet spot.”

There's hardly any doubt that the iPhone 6 is the best smartphone for your money given its glam new design, thin profile, superlative feel, improved battery life, a better camera, bigger and still beautiful screen, faster performance, and prospect of Apple Pay and VoLTE to come. In the world of smartphones, this is the biggest leap forward yet.
