New Delhi: WhatsApp launched its desktop apps for Windows and Mac. The new app, quite similar to WhatsApp launched last year, is available for download via the company's site and is compatible with all the devices running Windows 8, and devices running Mac OS 10.9 and above.

After the launch of this desktop app, WhatsApp is now available across all popular platforms in app form. WhatsApp wrote in its blog "Today [Tuesday] we're introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere - whether on your phone or computer at home or work."

Previously, WhatsApp was only available on PCs and Mac computers via Internet browser. But after the WhatsApp app users will have an advantage that they don’t need to open a separate browser tab on the PC, and can instead use the app directly. Also on the app front, it has added new features, which include the ability to share different file formats and more.

Here’s how to download WhatsApp desktop app:

  • Visit the official website of WhatsApp.
  • Click according to the system you are using. Click on ‘Mac OS X 10.9 and higher’ if you are a Mac user or ‘Windows 8 and higher’ if you are a windows user.
  • After the download, click on the WhatsAppSetup.exe file and complete the installation.
  • Then open the desktop app as well as WhatsApp on your smartphone. Click on the settings and hit the WhatsApp Web. Then scan the QR code with your smartphone to sync the mobile version of your WhatApp to the desktop version of the app.
  • WhatsApp will be paired to the desktop app and users can start chatting.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp announced that it has more than a billion monthly active users.

Last month, it also launched end-to-end encryption across the platform including chats, media and voice calls, making it impossible for anyone to know about the chat details.
