New Delhi: The long wait for the Android N name is over as Google has finally revealed the name of its next Android version. And as widely rumoured, Android N is not called Nutella -- it's Nougat.

Android versions are named after popular desserts and the new Android Nougat is based after a popular dessert originated in Europe. Nougat is made with sugar or honey, roasted nuts and whipped egg whites.

"Introducing #AndroidNougat. Thank you, world, for all your sweet name ideas! #AndroidNReveal," the company wrote on Twitter.

The tradition of naming Google’s mobile operating system started with Android 1.5 Cupcake, the first OS in the series. It continued with Android 1.6 Donut, Android 2.0 Eclair, Android 2.2 Froyo, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The pattern continued with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Android 4.4 KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

At this year's Google I/O developer conference in May, Google announced a contest to name the upcoming Android version, dubbed as Android N. The company asked for suggestions saying that users could submit suggestions for the name online.

Some of the Android N features: It will allow users to open two apps in split-screen mode on Nexus devices as well as other smartphones and tablets.

It will measure and change the screen display of various apps. Also the user can himself recreate it too with new dimensions. For example, a user can keep tweeting while watching a video on YouTube.

Some other features are that the new version will allow users to block phone numbers at the system level, which means blocking will not be limited to phone’s default dialer but will extend to apps like Dialler, Hangouts or Messenger. For instance if a number has been blocked at system-level, other apps will also block it without any other tweaking needed.
