Vijay Mallaya, it appears, was completely unaware of his arrest when he woke up in London this morning.

Early in the morning, around 7.30 am local time, Mallya was actively tweeting about his Formula One team – Sahara Force India.

Sources said that a team of the Indian government led by a Joint Secretary level officer held a secret meeting with UK counterpart some time back to convince the authority of Mallaya’s alleged involvement in financial frauds. The team also comprised officials from the Home ministry, the ED among others.

Mallya’s arrest comes barely months after India made a formal request for extradition to India on February 8 this year. There have been many meetings between ministers and officials of both sides. India has mounted diplomatic pressure on the British government that has been instrumental in getting Mallya to face the law.

Over a year after he fled to the United Kingdom, beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya was today arrested by the Scotland Yard in London. The development is seen as a step forward towards securing the extradition of the fugitive businessman wanted in India for loan default of over Rs 9,000 crore.

He is to be produced before the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London today.

Mallya was arrested on an extradition warrant, the Scotland Yard was quoted as saying.

A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will soon be travelling to London to initiate formalities of likely extradition of Mallya.
