Korean smartphone giant Samsung is likely to launch its first foldable smartphones in third quarter of 2017.

“Samsung is expected to roll out more than 100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter,” reported Korea Herald quoting its sources.

The new handset will feature a large display that will measure 7 inches when unfolded, said the report.

Samsung is making foldable smartphones codenamed as Project Valley. Through earlier reports we've known that the company is not planning to brand the new phones under its Galaxy S line-up.

“Since the company already secured fold-in phone technology, it was not a big challenge to shift into the fold-out phones,” a source told The Korea Herald.

Reportedly, Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone could be folded in half making it more portable for pockets. Not only this, the smartphone could also change into a 5-inch phone when folded or a 7-inch tablet when unfolded completely.

ET news had reported in December that Samsung will roll out a small number of foldable smartphone and will continue to produce more only after knowing customers say on the phone.

Meanwhile, rival LG is also looking to make 100,00 foldable devices in the fourth quarter, a different source said. Apparently, LG started development of fold-out technology two to three years ago.
